Many of Japan’s aesthetic and culture practices stem from centuries of imperial tradition and hierarchy. Stemming from the idea of wabi sabi, traditional culture practices focus on simplicity, unity with nature and control. In contrast, modern popular culture reveals a love affair with the West and the ethos of excess and novelty. Together, this tapestry forms the cultural landscape of Japan that this course explores.

This very special Environmental Science course will visit two major sites, The Antarctic and The Amazon, where climatological changes in the Antarctic will be compared with changes that have taken place in the Amazon. The course will involve a minimum 9-night expedition cruise to the Antarctic, as well as a minimum 5-night stay in an Ecolodge on the Amazon River, with short stays in Buenos Aires, Argentina and Iquitos, Peru.
